The math

A staffed writer at $1,540 a week for 50 weeks makes $77,000 a year. A freelancer at $40 an hour for 20 hours a week makes $41,600. A $2,000 script is a flat fee, and a net point adds royalties if the show gets views.

Questions

Do I need the WGA?

No. Most vertical productions are non-guild, and the WGA has confirmed vertical drama is covered on signatory shows. Credits can count toward membership.

Can I do this alongside other work?

Yes. At 350 to 500 words an episode, a fast writer can draft several episodes in a day.
